A punctum plug (tear duct plug) is a small medical device that is inserted into the tear duct (puncta) of an eye to block the duct. This prevents the drainage of liquid from the eye. They are used to treat dry eye.
Types of Punctum Plugs:
Temporary- Made up of collagen. Dissolves within 7-10 days
Semi permanent- Made up of copolymers lasting upto 60-180 days
Permanent- Made up of permanent material silicone lasting 3-4 years
